Preventing the Need for Sports Physical Therapy

Typically, we don’t think about sports injuries until after the injury occurs. It’s only then that we go over all of the ways we could have prevented the accident and how we could be exercising like normal. Don’t go through the pain of the “what ifs” and take a few minutes to prevent some of the most common sports injuries that can keep you down. These simple steps will prevent pain and the need for extensive sports physical therapy:

  1. Get plenty of rest. There is such a thing as training too much. Be sure you are getting plenty of rest in between practice to rest your muscles and give your body a breather. Also, be sure to get enough sleep before a big game. Being tired won’t help your game or your body. 
  2. Drink fluids. Hydration is so important! Make sure your body has all of the hydration it needs by alternating water and sports drinks with electrolytes. Also, choose snacks such as oranges, watermelon, cucumbers, and lettuce to get that extra boost of fluids. 
  3. Balance your workout. Is every day leg day? It shouldn’t be! A well-balanced fitness routine ensures that every part of your body is equally strong. If one area of the body is compensating for another, it could add strain and harm your body more.
  4. Stretch. We know you know to stretch, but are you doing it properly? By spending a good amount of time stretching, you eliminate some of the most common injuries that physical therapists see. Be sure you are stretching both before and after your practice or game. Your muscles will thank you!

Just by taking a few extra minutes to listen to your body and do these simple steps, you can prevent a major injury and keep yourself from having to spend time on the bench.
